That advice is wrong once golden cookies enter the picture, because one of the most valuable effects in the game pays out based on how many cookies you are holding, not how fast you make them.

The Lucky! formula

When you click a golden cookie and get “Lucky!”, the game awards:

min( bank × 0.15 , CpS × 900 ) + 13

In words: fifteen percent of your current cookie bank, capped at fifteen minutes of production, plus thirteen cookies.

The lesser version that can appear from wrath cookies is weaker:

min( bank × 0.05 , CpS × 600 ) + 13

Both are a
min()
. That single detail drives the whole strategy.

What the cap means for you

Because the payout is the smaller of the two terms, there is an exact bank size at which Lucky! stops improving:

bank × 0.15 = CpS × 900
bank = CpS × 6000

So the target is 6,000 seconds of production — 100 minutes’ worth of cookies held in the bank. Below that, every extra cookie you hold makes your next Lucky! bigger. Above that, you are hoarding for nothing and should spend the surplus on buildings.

Your CpS

Optimal bank for Lucky!

Lucky! payout at cap

1,000

6 million

900,000

1 million

6 billion

900 million

1 billion

6 trillion

900 billion

The Frenzy interaction that doubles the target

Here is the part that catches people out. The cap is computed from your CpS at the moment you click. If a Frenzy (×7) is active, your CpS is seven times higher, so the cap is seven times higher too.

A “Lucky!” clicked during a Frenzy can therefore pay out up to seven times more — but only if your bank is large enough to reach the raised cap. The full-Frenzy target becomes:

bank = CpS × 6000 × 7 = CpS × 42,000

This is why experienced players hold much larger banks than seems sensible. They are not being cautious; they are keeping the Lucky! cap unlocked for the moment a Frenzy lands.

Get Lucky changes the maths again

The heavenly upgrade Get Lucky doubles the duration of golden cookie effects. It does not change the Lucky! formula directly, but by extending Frenzy from 77 to 154 seconds it roughly doubles your chances of catching a second golden cookie during the first one — which is exactly the scenario where a capped Lucky! pays out at ×7.

Practical banking rules

Early game: ignore all of this. Spend everything. Your CpS is so low that the bank cap is trivial to reach.

Mid game: keep roughly 100 minutes of CpS banked before buying the next building. If you are above that, buy freely.

Late game / combo play: hold toward the Frenzy-adjusted target when you are actively watching for cookies. Dump the bank into buildings when you go idle or before ascending.

Always spend before ascending. Banked cookies are lost and do not count toward prestige — only all-time baked does.

Cookie chains

Cookie Chains are a separate effect where each successive golden cookie in the chain pays more than the last, escalating rapidly. They are also bank-limited: the chain can only continue while you can “afford” the next step relative to your bank and CpS. A big bank lets a chain run further before it breaks.

The practical advice is the same — hold cookies if you want the big payouts. A chain that breaks after three steps because your bank was empty is a very expensive mistake.

The counter-argument

Holding cookies has a real cost: those cookies are not buying buildings, and buildings compound. If you are a pure idle player who rarely sees a golden cookie, hoarding is a net loss — just buy things.

The banking strategy pays off specifically for players who are present and clicking. Match the strategy to how you actually play, not to how the guides assume you play.

Start a run and try holding 100 minutes of CpS before your next purchase — the difference in Lucky! payouts is immediate and obvious.

The Lucky! payout is 15% of your bank capped at 15 minutes of production.
