Ascension is the single biggest decision in Cookie Clicker, and it is also the one most players get wrong. They either ascend far too early, throwing away a run that was about to pay off, or they sit on a save for weeks because they are afraid of “losing everything.” This guide explains exactly what the game calculates when you ascend, and how to use that formula to time your resets.
What ascension actually does
When you ascend, you wipe your bakery: buildings, upgrades, achievements progress toward CpS, and your cookie bank all reset. In exchange you convert your all-time cookies baked into prestige levels, and each prestige level becomes a permanent heavenly chip you can spend in the heavenly upgrade tree.
The conversion is not linear. The game uses a cube root:
prestige level = (total cookies baked / 1,000,000,000,000) ^ (1/3)That divisor is one trillion (1e12), and the exponent is 1/3. This one line explains every piece of ascension advice you will ever read.
Why the cube root changes everything
Because prestige scales with the cube root, getting twice the prestige requires eight times the cookies. Getting three times the prestige requires twenty-seven times the cookies.

Every three orders of magnitude in cookies gives you ten times the prestige. That is the rhythm of the entire game.
The practical rule: ascend when you can roughly double
The community rule of thumb is to ascend when you can gain enough new prestige levels to at least double your current total. If you are sitting at 500 prestige levels, a reset that nets you another 40 levels is usually not worth the rebuild time. A reset that takes you to 1,000+ is.
Early on this happens constantly, sometimes several times a day. Later, doubling can take a week or more of a single run, and that is normal and correct. Long runs are not a failure state; they are what the cube root does to you.
Heavenly chips are worthless until you unlock them
This is the trap that catches almost every new ascender. Prestige levels give +1% CpS each — but only the fraction you have unlocked with heavenly upgrades. A fresh ascension with 1,000 prestige levels and no unlock upgrades gives you nothing at all.
The unlock chain, and the cumulative potential each step grants:

Buy these five first, in order, before anything else. Until “Heavenly key” is purchased, you are running on a fraction of the prestige you have already earned. A player with 2,000 prestige levels and only “Heavenly chip secret” is getting a +100% CpS bonus. The same player with the full chain gets +2,000%.
What to buy after the unlock chain
Once your prestige potential is fully unlocked, the priority shifts to quality-of-life and multipliers:
- Legacy — the gateway upgrade; nothing works without it.
- Permanent upgrade slots — these let you carry a chosen upgrade through ascensions. They are bought with sugar lumps, not chips, but they pair with ascension planning. Park a strong late-game upgrade here so every fresh run starts stronger.
- Starter kit / Starter kitchen — you begin each run with free cursors and grandmas, which shortens the tedious opening minutes.
- Season switcher — unlocks the seasonal events permanently, which matters for achievement hunting and for the Christmas upgrade chain.
- Golden cookie upgrades — anything that increases golden cookie frequency or duration compounds with the combo strategies covered in our golden cookie guide.
Do not forget to spend your bank before ascending
Cookies in your bank are lost on ascension, and they do not count toward prestige — only all-time baked does. So before you hit the reset button:
- Buy every building and upgrade you can still afford. Buildings you buy still contribute to achievements, and achievements raise your milk multiplier for the next run.
- Pop your wrinklers. They pay back more than they ate, and that payout counts as cookies baked.
- Check for cheap achievements you are close to — a few hundred more clicks or one more building tier can be worth a permanent milk bump.
A note on “optimal” play
There is a real optimal ascension interval, and it depends on your combo skill, whether you idle or click actively, and how much real-world time you can spend. But the difference between “good enough” and “mathematically perfect” is small compared to the difference between “bought the unlock chain” and “did not.” Get the five unlock upgrades, ascend when you can double, and you will be ahead of most players.
